Cornish Art History Group
St. Hilary Church is proud to host the Art History group led by Catherine Wallace, who shares her expert knowledge and passion for Cornish art and craft from 1880 to the present day. Through her engaging and accessible lectures, Catherine brings to life the artists, stories, and movements that have shaped Cornwall’s rich creative heritage.
At St. Hilary Church, Catherine Wallace ran a fascinating lecture on Annie Walke and the group of talented artists who created paintings for St. Hilary Church, held in the Old School Room meeting room. Among these artists was Harold Harvey, who, along with others, was greatly influenced by Father Bernard Walke, the Catholic-Anglican vicar of St. Hilary for twenty years.
Fr Bernard and his wife, Annie Walke (1877–1965), befriended many artists living in or visiting Cornwall at the time and invited them to contribute artworks to the church. The lecture explored the rich artistic legacy of St. Hilary, featuring works by Annie Walke, Ernest and Dod Procter, Harold Knight, Alethea Garstin, Joan Manning-Saunders, and Roger Fry, each of whom helped shape the unique creative and spiritual character of the church. Concerts & Music
St. Hilary Church has a rich and welcoming musical culture, embracing a wide variety of styles and performances. We regularly host concerts, recitals, and charity events, as well as non-religious gatherings that bring people together through creativity and shared enjoyment. From classical to contemporary music, local talent to visiting performers, our church is alive with sound, warmth, and a strong sense of community.
Rhys Wynne-Jones, a talented pianist from NightChurch Penzance, has become well known both locally and nationally after his inspiring story touched hearts across the country. Having experienced homelessness, Rhys went viral in 2024 and has since raised over £25,000 for charity. We were honoured to host Rhys for a wonderful concert at St. Hilary Church in 2024, where his music brought people together in hope and celebration. His performances, filled with warmth and generosity, even featured on BBC Breakfast News, shining a light on the power of music, community, and compassion. His next concert at St Hilary church is in December 2025.
Sue Aston; a member of St Hilary Church congregation, shared a beautiful performance of The Wexford Carol at St. Hilary Church, capturing the gentle spirit and lyrical beauty of this traditional Irish Christmas piece. Filmed amidst the church’s stunning artwork and rich heritage, her performance reflected both the warmth of the season and the inspiring atmosphere of St. Hilary itself. Sue expressed how the church’s art and history have become a great source of creative inspiration for her as she continues her musical journey and upcoming recording work.
